# Creating Records
### What This Guide Covers
This guide walks you through how to create new Records in your Project, how to understand which archetypes are available to you, and why some options might be grayed out at certain times.

### Quick Start:
* Your Projects are configured so that as new Records are created they stay organized.
* This **organization determines how Records can be related** to each (think of a family tree)
* Some Records may be created alone at top-level, others may need to be created underneath other Records. (parents vs children)
#### Ways of Creating New Records
* If you read [Mapping & GIS](/codifi-docs/mobile-app/mapping-locations.md) you know that Records can be created through the map when logging points, lines, and polygons.
* But they can also be created through the Records List view
* Through the **Records List**, it's possible to:
* Create new "top-level" Records (per your Project's configuration) – Just tap the blue "+" button in the bottom right of your screen.
* Create new Records as children of existing Records
* Tap the next to a Record on the List –> tap Add Child Record (will be grayed out if the Record isn't eligible for children)
* OR, Tap to open a Record –> tap Linked Records –> tap the next to the Record in the bottom sheet –> tap Add Child Record (will be grayed out if the Record isn't eligible for children)
