# The Map Screen
When you open a Project and switch to Map View, here's what you'll see:
#### Top-Right Controls
| Button | What It Does |

#### Heading-Up Rotation
As of v3.3 the locate button has **three states** rather than two. Each tap moves to the next one.
| Tap | Mode | What the map does |
| ------ | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| First | **Centered** | Follows your GPS position as you move. North stays at the top. |
| Second | **Heading-up** | Rotates so whatever is in front of you is at the top of the screen. |
| Third | **Free** | Hands the map back to you. Pan and rotate as you like. |
Rotation uses the device compass referenced to **true north**, with the magnetic declination worked out for your position, so the imagery lines up with what is actually in front of you.
You can pinch to zoom without leaving heading-up. Panning away or twisting the map by hand returns control to you, and the compass button squares the map back to north.

**Heading-up is the mode most people want in dense terrain.** Reading a north-up map while walking a transect means constantly translating between the screen and the ground. Heading-up removes that step.

#### The Record Card
When you tap a Record on the map, a **Record Card** slides up from the bottom showing:
* **Record name** and **archetype badge**
* **Assignee avatar** (tap to assign someone)
* **Status indicator** (tap to change status)
* **Styled map preview** showing the Record's location with full Project map layers
* **Close button (X)**
**Action buttons on the card:**

**More actions menu:**
| Action | What It Does |
| ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **View Location Info** | View detailed GPS metadata for the Record's captured location |
| **Duplicate & Edit** | Create a copy of this Record and open it for editing |
| **Manage Relationships** | View and edit parent-child relationships and linked Records |
| **Focus Lineage** | Filter the map and list to show only this Record's ancestor and descendant tree |
| **Take Photo** | Open the camera directly from the map — photo attaches to the selected Record without navigating away |
| **Delete Record** | Permanently delete this Record (requires confirmation) |

**Take Photo** opens the camera as a modal overlay, so you stay on the map with the Record still selected after capture. This is the fastest way to attach a photo to a Record while doing fieldwork.

#### The Smart FAB (+)
The floating action button in the bottom-right creates new Records. It adapts to your context:
* **With a Record selected** — shows child archetypes available for that Record
* **Recent creations** — shows shortcuts for archetypes you've recently created, so you can repeat patterns quickly
* **"New Record"** is always available as the primary action closest to the button
Recent creation contexts persist across Project switches and expire after 6 hours.
#### Basic Map Gestures
These work just like other map apps:
* **Drag with one finger** — Move around the map
* **Pinch with two fingers** — Zoom in or out
* **Double-tap** — Quick zoom in
* **Tap with two fingers** — Quick zoom out
* **Rotate with two fingers** — Spin the map (compass appears when rotated; tap compass to reset to north)
* **Long-press on map** — Opens Feature Discovery mode (find Records at that location)
#### Map-to-List Sync
When you have a Record selected on the map and switch to List view, the list automatically scrolls to that Record and briefly highlights it — so you never lose track of what you were looking at.
