# Basic Concepts of Report Tag Conventions

You need to specify your expectations within your **`.docx`** or **`.xlsx`** report templates so that the Codifi reporting system knows what kinds of data, media, location information, and/or other Project content should be printed into a document when you attempt to generate a report. You specify your expectations by using report tags. Tags are written within double curly brackets:

> {{term}}

An example of a basic tag is {{name}}, which, when included in a report template and then used when generating a report, will return the name of whatever the context might be, such as the name of your Project, or, if you are generating a report for a specific Record within a Project, the name of the Record.

We'll go over many more report tags that can pull from specific sources of Project data, and how to write those tags, [in much more detail, in later sections of this documentation](https://codifi-fdm.gitbook.io/codifi-reports/reports/report-tag-conventions/report-tag-sources). Here we'll give a higher-level overview of different scenarios.

For nuanced tagging, multiple terms can be included within one tag, each separated by a period; you can think of these as writing out a sentence to more clearly specify to the Codifi system what Project content you're trying to source within a report.

> {{term.term}}

> {{Project.Status.Label}}

Another example of this is `{{Project.name}}`, which specifies that you want the system to source the name of the Project from which the report is generated. This specificity helps when sourcing content from different Project levels, especially when the context may vary. Simply using `{{name}}` might return a name you didn't intend.

Some report tags require additional clarification using parentheses, where you specify a value that the system will use to find the content you're requesting:

> {{term(term or condition)}}

Here's an example where you are specifying that you want the value from a specific field on a Project or Record to print to the report

> {{field(field label)}}

[In the detailed tables of sources of content for tags](https://codifi-fdm.gitbook.io/codifi-reports/reports/report-tag-conventions/report-tag-sources), you'll see which tags allow/require you to specify your intentions within parentheses.

Whether your beginning context is the Project or the Record level, you can reach up or down using certain terms to get the intended data.
